Kenyans went to the polls on the 8th of August to exercise their democratic right of electing the President, Governor, Senator, Member of Parliament, Woman Member of Assembly and Member of County Assembly.
Among those who went to exercise their democratic right were the good people of Laikipia County. They braced the cold Tuesday morning to elect their leaders.
There were two key positions that were important for the people of Laikipia: the gubernatorial position and the presidential position but most importantly, the gubernatorial position.
There were two political titans who were bracing for the Laikipia gubernatorial position; the incumbent Governor Irungu who was vying on a Jubilee party ticket and Honorable Ndiritu Muriithi who was vying on an independent ticket.
As an independent candidate, Ndiritu Muriithi faced numerous challenges. First, he was running as an independent candidate. Second, he was running in a Jubilee stronghold zone. Third, he did not have what it takes in terms of resources as his opponent.
From the onset, everything seemed to be working against Honorable Ndiritu Muriithi. The whole government machinery, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta pitched camp in Laikipia County campaigning for the outgoing Governor.
Talking about the politics of Laikipia this year without mentioning Mr. Mwangi Kiunjuri, the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution, will be unfair. This is the man who literary pitched camp in Laikipia County in a desperate effort of making sure that the incumbent Governor then, Irungu is reelected and Honorable Ndiritu Muriithi is rejected.
Mr. Mwangi Kiunjuri used all the tactics including using the government subsidized maize meal to try and sway the voting patterns of the people in Laikipia. At one time, he took the subsidized maize flour to Laikipia and distributed them for free under the pretence of helping to shield people against hunger but all was to campaign for the outgoing Governor and discredit Honorable Ndiritu Muriithi.
But on the 8th of August, the people of Laikipia were out to teach some people hard lessons that they will live to remember. These people were Mr. Irungu and Mr. Kiunjuri. The Laikipian people spoke loudly through the ballot box. They seemed to have realized that one can cheat some people some time but not all the people all the time. Honorable Ndiritu Muriithi went down in history as the first independent Governor in Kenya and in Laikipia County.
Two people were humiliated in this election; Mr. Irungu and Mr. Kiunjuri. The people of Laikipia decided to differentiate between poverty and property, thirst and water availability, ignorance and education and between democracy and aristocracy.
It is now emerging that after his candidate terribly losing to an independent candidate, Mr. Kiunjuri is back to Laikipia County to frustrate the new Governor even before he starts his work.
To frustrate the new Governor of Laikipia County, Mwangi Kiunjuri is planning to do this through the the county assembly of Laikipia County. One of his plan is to influence the kind of County Speaker of the County Assembly of Laikipia so that he can be used to make the life of the new Governor hard. He also plans to use the Speaker to influence the other Members of the County Assembly to make the new Governor look as a failed Governor and who is incapable of handling the affairs of Laikipia County. Kiunjuri knows that all the important decisions will have to pass through the County Assembly and by having the County Speaker on his side, he will be able to influence all the important decisions.
Dear Mwangi Kiunjuri, the people of Laikipia have spoken and they have spoken loudly and boldly. Why are you meddling in their affairs? You are a Cabinet Secretary, not a politician in Laikipia or are you looking for a job as an official in the County Government of Laikipia? Your work is to manage the Ministry of Devolution, that is if the President will reappoint you and you should stick to that and leave the people of Laikipia to start enjoying the fruits of their new Governor.
