Kenyans have now exactly six days to the much awaited and much publicized general election which is set to take place on the 8th of August 2017.
Among the hotly contested positions are the gubernatorial positions with more than 200 people in the field trying to convince and confuse Kenyans to vote for them.
The gubernatorial position in Laikipia County has just moved a notch higher with the battle being between two political titans; the incumbent Joshua Irungu and the force in the making Ndiritu Muriithi.
The forthcoming coming general election gives the people of Laikipia County an opportunity to choose between property and poverty, construction and deconstruction, wealth creation and looting, equality and inequality, sustainable water management and leaving in the desert and between factual truths and unfounded truths.
As it is the norm, the incumbent Governor for Laikipia County has an upper hand in terms of resources and machinery just by the fact that he is an incumbent. The governor is also running on a Jubilee ticket, meaning the Jubilee brigade is behind him including President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The “fact” that Joshua Irungu is in Jubilee is about to change after the surfacing of a video showing that the man has shifted from the ruling Jubilee to the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA). If the contents of the video are something to go by, then the hard questions should be channeled out.
The problem with most Kenyan voters is that we are often blind to facts. We are more likely to choose the tribal kings at the expense of upright and straightforward person, a political party over the true colours of the office holder and we are known to be people of the “memory of the warthog”; that is easy to react and quick to forget.
Now, if it is true that Joshua Irungu has shifted to the National Super Alliance (NASA) then:
i) Why is President Uhuru Kenyatta, the leader of the ruling Jubilee and the Presidential candidate, busy campaigning for him?
ii) If Joshua Irungu has indeed shifted to NASA, what next for the people of Laikipia? Is it time that they now shifted away from blindly following political parties and looked at Ndiritu Muriithi?
iii) If Joshua Irungu is playing ” double” with the minds of the Laikipians, why should they trust him with a second term as their governor?
iv) Given that Joshua Irungu has not dismissed the video, should the people of Laikipia now wake up and see and audit how steadfast the independent candidate Ndiritu Muriithi has been?
There was a discussion as to whether Cabinet Secretaries were allowed to engage in campaigning activities. Some said they were not supposed to but some said, there was no law that prohibited them.
Mwangi Kiunjuri, the CS for Devolution has been very vocal in campaigning in Laikipia County. It had even become difficult to distinguish between Kiunjuri the CS and Kiunjuri the politician. In Laikipia County for instance, the “good” CS has been capitalizing on the “hunger” and “mystery” of the people of Laikipia by playing the “politics of Inga” to sway their votes.
The CS has been using maize flour to sway the voting patterns of Laikipia County especially concerning the gubernatorial position.
Now, has Joshua Irungu moved to NASA?
