Kenyans have been left infuriated after the much anticipated and much publicized Presidential Running Mates Debate ended prematurely after the participants failed to show up.
Of the eight running mates expected at the national event, only one, Eliud Muthiora Kariara, a young man in his 20s showed up and stole the hearts of many with his boldness and textbook way of answering and tackling questions.
The showdown had been expected between the two “political titans”, William Ruto of Jubilee and Kalonzo Musyoka of National Super Alliance but the two men decided to show the nation the “middle” finger when they failed to show up and did not communicate reasons why.
The debate was televised across all television channels as well as all the radio stations, and was aimed at giving Kenyans an opportunity to see what their leaders have for them even as the country prepares for a general election 20 days away.
“How can we employ people who do not show up for a job interview?” One Kenyan posed on Twitter.
“By snubbing this debate, Kalonzo Musyoka and William Ruto have treated a Kenyan voter as one of the toilet papers they use to wipe their corrupt bottoms and drain it down the toilet,” another Kenyan came up furiously.
The Presidential Debate is expected to take place on 24th of July. Already President Uhuru Kenyatta has indicated that he would not be attending. His rival, Raila Odinga had also indicated that he would not be attending the event.
There has not been a clear communication, however, from both camps if they will change their mind on the debates. On Monday, Denis Itumbi, the man in charge of online communication at the office of the President, angered many when he said that the President would not attend the event.
“Who is Itumbi? He is not the statehouse spokesperson. Who is he to speak to Kenyans about President Uhuru Kenyatta? He should stick to Twitter and Facebook,” (paraphrased) Said Miguna Miguna, a Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant.
