#KuraYakoChaguoLako, The New Way to Get People Register
There is a voter apathy in Kenya and politicians in most parts of the country have been left a frustrated lot. Majority of them, at the start of the registration exercise, they have high targets and ambitions and even vowed that they will show others the true meaning of the famous tyranny of numbers phrase.
Politicians have been traversing the country, shouting their lungs out urging their supporters to come out in large numbers as register as voters. But it appears as though the more they shouted, the more people ignored them and the more number being registered reduced.
The most affected areas with voter apathy are the perceived opposition strongholds. The numbers of those who have turned out to register as voters in these areas have been dwindling with each passing day. Politicians from these regions seem not to understand what the real reason for voter apathy is. Some of them have even given up.
On the contrary, the regions perceived to be Jubilee’s strongholds are booming with more voters turning out to register for forthcoming general elections. There numbers have been good, ranging from 70 percent to 90 percent turnout and they are increasing with each coming day. The opposition is left perplexed and only crying foul over fewer BVR kits, poor network and so on but they have not taken time to ask themselves why people in Central Kenya are turning out in Large numbers. I will tell them why.
The reason why Central Kenya seem to be doing fine in terms of voter registration is because of the following:
- Politicians from Central Kenya know the niche that they have to target to register. They know that the youth are the majority in the region and they know that for them to make it, then the majority (the youth) have to register. This is the reason why they have come up with a campaign called #KuraYakoChaguoLako where they are using artists like Jaguar, DNG, Size 8, Konsoul and others to help lure the youth to come out and register. Today they are in Nakuru, Nyeri and Kiambu for the same while the opposition is busy with political rallies. Let me tell you opposition, political rallies will not get people to register but borrow a leaf from the Central Kenya and you will be surprised by the magic.
- People in Central Kenya know who they want and what they should do to retain him. Remember that the ruling party is already sure of who their flagbearer is and the loyal fans of the flagbearer know that it is only through them registering as voters that they will be able to make sure that the man they want remain in power. Opposition on the other hand seems headless, no flagbearer and has kept their people guessing and this, believe me you have contributed to people in their regions not turning out to register as voters. They will way this is a lie and an innuendo but it is the bitter truth.
Today, #KuraYakoChaguoLako is in Nakuru at Railways Grounds where Jaguar, DNG, Konsoul and the rest will entertain people, Kiambu at Thika Stadium where Size 8, Mungai wa Njoroge and others are entertaining people and in Nyeri at Kamukunji Grounds where Bahati, Willy Paul and others are on stage live.
